PSIRA Grades Explained: Which Security Grade Do You Need?

A complete breakdown of all 5 PSIRA security grades — from entry-level Grade E to management-level Grade A — and how to choose the right one for your career.

If you are thinking about a career in the security industry — or looking to advance in one — understanding the PSIRA grading system is essential. The grade you hold determines what roles you can take on, what you earn, and how far you can go in the industry.

South Africa's Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) uses a five-grade system, running from Grade E at entry level through to Grade A at management level. Each grade has its own training requirements, scope of work, and career opportunities.

This guide breaks down all five grades so you can make an informed decision about where to start — or where to go next.

How the PSIRA Grading System Works

PSIRA grades are not just certificates — they are legally recognised qualifications that determine what you are authorised to do as a security professional in South Africa.

The system is structured so that each grade builds on the previous one. You cannot skip grades: to qualify for Grade D, you must already hold Grade E. To qualify for Grade C, you need Grade D — and so on up the ladder.

This progression ensures that every security professional has a solid foundation before taking on more complex or senior responsibilities.

Grade E — Entry-Level Security Officer

Who it's for: Anyone starting out in the security industry with no prior experience.

Grade E is the minimum qualification required to work as a security officer in South Africa. It is the starting point for the vast majority of people entering the industry.

What Grade E Qualifies You to Do

  • Work as a security officer at access control points
  • Conduct guarding duties at residential, commercial, and industrial sites
  • Carry out foot patrols and monitor premises
  • Respond to basic security incidents under supervision

What Grade E Training Covers

Grade E training covers the legal framework governing security officers in South Africa (including the PSIRA Act and the Criminal Procedure Act), basic security procedures, access control, patrol techniques, incident reporting, and occupational health and safety.

Who Should Start with Grade E

If you have no previous security experience, Grade E is where you begin. It is also the right starting point if you have worked in security informally but have never held a formal PSIRA qualification.

Grade D — Security Officer (Advanced)

Who it's for: Qualified Grade E officers ready to take on greater responsibility.

Grade D builds on the foundation of Grade E and prepares security officers for more demanding roles and environments.

What Grade D Qualifies You to Do

  • Work in higher-risk environments requiring greater skill and judgement
  • Take on more complex access control and guarding responsibilities
  • Operate with greater independence on site
  • Handle a wider range of security incidents

What Grade D Training Covers

Grade D training deepens your knowledge of security law and procedures, introduces more advanced patrol and response techniques, and covers areas such as crowd management, vehicle searching, and working in higher-risk environments.

Who Should Pursue Grade D

If you have completed Grade E and have some experience in the field, Grade D is the natural next step. It opens doors to better-paying positions and more varied work environments.

Grade C — Security Supervisor

Who it's for: Experienced security officers ready to move into supervisory roles.

Grade C marks the transition from operational security work to supervision and team management. It is a significant step up in both responsibility and earning potential.

What Grade C Qualifies You to Do

  • Supervise security teams on site
  • Manage access control operations and security procedures
  • Conduct site assessments and risk evaluations
  • Liaise with clients and management on security matters
  • Train and mentor junior security officers

What Grade C Training Covers

Grade C training introduces supervisory skills, team management, client communication, and more advanced security planning. It also covers the legal responsibilities that come with a supervisory role.

Who Should Pursue Grade C

If you hold Grade D and have been working in the industry for some time, Grade C is the qualification that takes you from the ground floor to a leadership position. It is particularly valuable for officers who want to move into site management or team leader roles.

Grade B — Senior Security Officer

Who it's for: Supervisors and experienced security professionals targeting senior operational roles.

Grade B is a senior qualification that prepares security professionals for leadership roles in larger, more complex security operations.

What Grade B Qualifies You to Do

  • Lead and manage security teams across multiple sites or large operations
  • Develop and implement security plans and procedures
  • Conduct advanced risk assessments
  • Manage relationships with clients at a senior level
  • Oversee the performance and development of security teams

What Grade B Training Covers

Grade B training focuses on advanced security management, strategic planning, risk assessment, and the leadership skills required to run complex security operations effectively.

Who Should Pursue Grade B

Grade B is for experienced security professionals who have progressed through the lower grades and are ready to take on senior operational or management responsibilities. It is a stepping stone to Grade A and to senior management roles in the industry.

Grade A — Security Manager

Who it's for: Senior security professionals targeting management-level positions.

Grade A is the highest PSIRA qualification. It is the qualification that opens the door to the most senior roles in the private security industry — including security manager, operations director, and company-level leadership positions.

What Grade A Qualifies You to Do

  • Manage entire security operations at an organisational level
  • Develop company-wide security policies and strategies
  • Oversee multiple teams, sites, and contracts
  • Engage with clients, regulators, and stakeholders at the highest level
  • Take on directorial and executive roles within security companies

What Grade A Training Covers

Grade A training covers advanced security management, business operations, strategic planning, financial management within a security context, and the regulatory and compliance requirements for running a security operation at scale.

Who Should Pursue Grade A

Grade A is for experienced security professionals who have worked their way through the grading system and are ready to lead at the highest level. It is the qualification that distinguishes security managers from security officers.

How to Choose the Right Grade

Here is a simple framework for deciding which grade is right for you:

Your Situation Recommended Grade
No security experience Grade E
Hold Grade E, want to advance Grade D
Hold Grade D, ready to supervise Grade C
Hold Grade C, targeting senior roles Grade B
Hold Grade B, aiming for management Grade A

If you are unsure which grade is right for your specific situation, the best approach is to speak directly with a PSIRA-accredited training centre. They can assess your background and experience and recommend the most appropriate starting point.
